Make Your Home Among Strangers
This is a fiction book but I believe it can give educators necessary insight into the challenges faced by first generation college students. The main character is a Latina who is attending a small college far from her home in Miami. She doesn't "fit" into her college community which seems to be predominately privileged and white, but soon she finds she is no longer fitting into her family and community back in Miami. The book is set during the Elial Gonzalez crisis of the 90's but the issues it raises are timeless and universal.
